Today in Western Christianity, Easter Day is always celebrated on the Sunday following the Paschal Full Moon date of the year. The early church fathers wished to keep Easter Sunday in correlation with the Jewish Passover. Because the death,
burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ occurred after the Passover, they wanted Easter Sunday to always be celebrated following the Passover. So, since the Jewish calendar is comprised on solar and lunar cycles, each Easter day is movable, with variable
Easter dates each year.
The celebration of Passover took place just
prior to the Crucifixion & Resurrection of Christ, the two holidays have been
intertwined from the outset in the word Pasch, which originally meant Passover,
arose to mean Easter as well.
Passover, which is Pesach in Hebrew, the holiday celebrating the Hebrews exodus from slavery in Egypt,
lasts 7 days in Israel and amongst reform Jews, and 8 days else where around the world. It begins on the
fifthteenth day of Nisan, which is the 7th month of the Jewish calendar. It
concludes on the 21st of Nisan in Israel, and on the 22nd of Nisan elsewhere. Since Hebrew days
commence and conclude at sundown, Passover begins at sundown on the day before.
How is Easter calculated? By the first Sunday after the paschal full moon which occurs on or after the vernal equinox.
When the full moon falls on a Sunday, then Easter is on the following Sunday. The
Easter holiday can occur anywhere between March 22 and April 25.
The Western church does not use the de facto, or astronomically accurate date for the vernal equinox, but
by a fixed date of March 21. And by full moon it does not entail the astronomical full moon, but the "ecclesiastical moon," which is
supported by tables created by the church. The calendar allows the date of Easter to be calculated in advance, rather than
being ascertained by actual astronomical observances, which are less predictable.
Now you know, when is Easter, the Easter dates for the coming year, how the date
of Easter is determined each year, and when is Easter Sunday.
